Thank you to Travis for the fancy/cool name (was that it?)
Anyway, Travis and I went to go check out the alternative space/gallery/house/whatever it is. It was pretty nice. It is located on the corner of University and NE 9th street...basically right past downtown. The front door opens up to stairs, followed by four mid-sized rooms with a fair amount of wall space. There is another back door connecting to a kitchen which we can keep completely closed and locked. Best of all, there is a large front balcony, which might give our show a good atmosphere for people to hang out outside etc. I am not sure of how I feel about the space yet, but here are some pictures. What do you guys think?
I concur with what Lorie has said here. If we were to use this space, we would probably disregard the kitchen/bathroom, and focus on the four other rooms. Using the balcony space as part of the "piece" (exhibition? "thing?") wouldn't be out of the question, but I like Lorie's suggestion of treating that as a lounge.
ReplyDeleteAn event that took place in such a space would really need to be set up as an installation or exhibit - open all night for people to freely browse at will. I could imagine four separate components - one in each room. Lorie, Josh, and I would have no trouble doing things in multiple rooms, but Alex and Crystal are obviously limited to a single spatial location. Something divided into quadrants could be interesting... 4 variations on a theme, 4 components to a non-linear narrative, 4 completely different things that we trick people into thinking are somehow related, etc.
What this space doesn't offer is a single location where a carefully-orchestrated event could take place at a given time to anything but the smallest audience. In other words, it would be great for an exhibition/installation, less great for a one-time performance.

ReplyDeleteOne more thing:
ReplyDeleteThe walls and floors are crooked - nothing is perfectly straight or symmetrical. Maybe the piece should be about asymmetry.
